  • Permission from the government is not required for depositions of willing witnesses in Singapore.
  • Depositions can be taken at any location.

Depositions in Singapore Checklist

When planning a deposition in Singapore, it’s important to allow enough time (ideally, 2 to 3 weeks) for scheduling due to associated logistical challenges. Counsel will determine whether the witness is willing to be deposed. If so, both parties can stipulate and begin the process of setting up the deposition.

If the witness is unwilling to be deposed and must be compelled to testify, a letter rogatory is required. For more information, visit the International Judicial Assistance Website for the Bureau of Consular Affairs

Medical Information

There are several modern medical facilities in Singapore, predominantly in the business district, which is very English-friendly. For more information, please contact the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers.

Money Matters

The currency used in Singapore is the Singapore Dollar (S$). While U.S. credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted at most of the hotels, restaurants and retail shops on the island, smaller establishments may not accept them, so it is good idea to carry a bit of cash. There are a number of ATMs around the island and most accept U.S. debit cards. There are currency exchange booths at the airport and various locations on the island.

For up-to-date information on the local conversion rate, visit a reputable currency converter website such as OANDA, which also provides an app for smartphones.

Weather

The weather in Singapore is hot and humid for most of the year. The average daytime temperature is 88ºF. November is the monsoon season, so be prepared for wet weather.

Voltage Information for Singapore

The voltage in Singapore is 220.

For business travelers, the following items will require only a plug adapter, which allows the plug for your device to fit into electrical outlets in Singapore. These devices are dual voltage and are designed to automatically adjust the voltage from 110 to 220 (“dual voltage”).

  • Cell phone chargers
  • Laptops
  • iPads
  • Stenographic machines (used by court reporters)

It is important not to confuse plug adapters with voltage. You cannot plug any 110-voltage equipment — even with a plug adapter on it – into a 220v outlet. You need either 110-220 (dual voltage) equipment or a transformer to convert from 110 to 220.
